Why Install Grab Bars?

  •  Annually, falls are reported by one-third of those 65 and older.
  • Two-thirds of those who fall will fall again within six months.
  • Among people 65 to 69, one out of every 200 falls results in a hip fracture, and among those 85 or over, one fall in 10 results in a hip fracture.
  • About 50 percent of the elderly who sustain a fall-related injury will be discharged to a nursing home rather than return home.
  • Most falls do not result in serious injury. However, there is often a psychological impact. Approximately 25 percent of community-dwelling people 75 or over unnecessarily restrict their activities because of fear of falling.

Who Needs Grab Bars?

We can all benefit from grab bars. Who hasn't experienced a momentary loss of balance? Our balance can be affected by age, disease, injury and medication. Grab bars can help us in and out of tub/showers, toilets and up and down steps.

Type of Grab Bars Installed:

We stock 1-1/4” diameter satin finish stainless steel grab bars with concealed screw mounting plates. They have a peen grip to improve the hold with wet hands. There are many other options available in size and finish which can be special ordered for your specific needs.

Typical Grab Bar Installations in Bathrooms:

The majority of tub/showers require 2 grab bars, even for small showers. Each grab bar serves a different function. The first grab bar is mounted vertically at the point of entry, usually a 16” grab Bar. This is the most important grab bar. A person uses it as they go up on one foot in order to straddle the tub/shower dam as they enter or exit the tub/shower. The second grab bar is a 24” grab bar installed horizontally on the adjacent wall. It can help one to get on and off the shower chair as well as to stabilize a person if they were to experience a momentary loss of balance. Instinctively one reaches to the side grab bar insuring a better grip and support.

How are Grab Bars Installed?

With the use of special tooling and hardware we can install grab bars in most material i.e. ceramic, granite, porcelain, travertine, and fiberglass, using appropriate anchors. Grab bars installed in drywall must be installed with wood backing therefore installations are either vertical or diagonally in order to fasten the grab bar into the wood stud. Where possible, we install grab bars at the toilet to lend support and assist when sitting down and getting up.
